Civil War History
My relocation to Western Maryland in the summer of 2025 placed me amongst some of the most significant battlefields of America’s Civil War. Scattered across the unsuspecting grasslands and mountains of West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania are reminders of some of the United States’ most pivotal moments.
ABOVE - Monocacy National Battlefield, Maryland. In July of 1864, outnumbered Union soldiers near Frederick resisted a Confederate force intent on capturing Washington, D.C.
BELOW - Bolivar Heights, West Virginia. located near Harpers Ferry, this area was the site of multiple battles and heavy bombardment over the course of the war.
ABOVE - Murphy Farm, West Virginia. In 1862, 12,000 Union soldiers surrendered on the fields of Murphy Farm, sealing their defeat in the siege of Harpers Ferry.
BELOW - Antietam National Battlefield. The site of the Civil War’s Bloodiest conflict, a victory for the Union in Sharpsburg, Maryland that prompted Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
